Why Renewable Energy Buyers Work with GUXIANG
We manufacture rather than trade, so forming, machining, threading and finishing sit inside one facility. On a renewable energy part that matters because the coating system, the material grade and the preload all have to agree with the site environment, and that agreement is easiest to hold inside one supply chain.
Corrosivity matched coating
Coating systems are selected against the atmospheric corrosivity category of the actual site rather than against a generic outdoor specification.
Galvanic pairing reviewed
Solar racking is the classic aluminium and stainless galvanic couple. Pairings are reviewed before parts are ordered, not after the corrosion appears.
Large diameter capability
Tower flange and anchor bolts in the large diameters used on wind structures are supplied with the same material certificate discipline as small parts.
High strength coating control
Hydrogen embrittlement control on plated high strength steel, because tower bolts are hot dip galvanized and that combination needs the process controlled.
Not sure which corrosivity category your site falls into?
Send the drawing, the material callout and the site location or environment. We will identify the corrosivity category, recommend a coating system, and flag any galvanic pairing that needs isolation before the parts are ordered.
Atmospheric Corrosivity Categories and Coating Selection
Atmospheric corrosivity is classified into categories, and the category is what selects the coating system. A specification written for a dry inland site will fail on a coastal wind farm, and the difference is a category rather than an opinion.
| श्रेणी | पर्यावरण | Typical corrosivity | Recommended system | Typical site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | Heated indoor, very dry | बहुत कम | जिंक चढ़ाना | Control rooms, indoor enclosures |
| C2 | Dry rural, low humidity | कम | Zinc plating or zinc flake | Inland ground mount, dry sites |
| C3 | Urban and light industrial | मध्यम | Zinc flake or Dacromet | Industrial estates, inland wind |
| C4 | Coastal, moderate salinity | उच्च | Zinc flake, Dacromet or hot dip | Coastal wind, coastal solar |
| C5 | Marine and severe coastal | Very high | Duplex stainless or heavy coating | Offshore wind, splash zone |
| CX | Offshore and tidal | चरम | Duplex or super duplex stainless | Offshore structures, tidal |
Categories follow ISO 12944-2. The category is determined by the first year corrosion rate of standard reference specimens, so it is a measurement rather than a judgement, and it can be established for a specific site. Where the environment changes within a site, for example a turbine base in the splash zone against the nacelle in clean air, different categories can apply to the same structure.
Vibration and Preload on Large Diameter Fasteners
On large diameter fasteners, friction uncertainty dominates the torque to preload relationship. A torque value that gives a tight preload band on a small bolt gives a very wide band on a large one, which is why wind structures specify a tension based method.
| Diameter range | Torque scatter | Recommended control | नोट | विशिष्ट उपयोग |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to M16 | मध्यम | Calibrated torque | Acceptable on most joints | Nacelle and cabinet hardware |
| M20 to M30 | चौड़ा | Turn of nut or DTI | Friction uncertainty grows | Nacelle, yaw and pitch |
| M36 to M64 | Very wide | Tensioning or DTI | Torque alone is not reliable | Tower flange connections |
| Above M64 | Very wide | Tensioning device | Load verified directly | Anchor and foundation bolts |
Solar racking is the classic aluminium and stainless galvanic couple. The aluminium rail and the stainless module clamp sit in contact in a wet, outdoor environment, and aluminium is well below stainless in the galvanic series, so the aluminium becomes the anode and corrodes around the clamp. Isolation at that interface, or a compatible material pairing, is the standard remedy, and it is much cheaper to specify at the enquiry stage than to replace racking after a few seasons. The same issue applies anywhere an aluminium frame meets a stainless fastener outdoors.
Traceability and Documentation
Renewable energy supply requires the material certificate chain and the coating records, because both feed the service life calculation. Here is what can accompany an order.
- EN 10204 3.1 material certificate
- Mill certificate traceability by heat lot
- Dimensional inspection report
- Mechanical property test report
- Coating thickness measurement
- Hydrogen embrittlement control record
- Corrosion or salt spray test report
- Lot marking on parts and packaging
- Retained sample held for future comparison
Traceability runs from the incoming mill certificate through forming, heat treatment and finishing, and is recorded by lot. Where your specification calls for a particular certificate format, a coating qualification or a corrosion test, send the requirement with the enquiry so we can confirm it before production.

Renewable Energy Fastener FAQs
Answers to the questions renewable energy engineers and procurement teams ask most often, with specific values rather than general assurances.
Which corrosivity category applies to a coastal wind farm?
Usually C4 for the atmospheric zone and C5 for anything close to the splash zone, against C3 or C2 for a dry inland site. The category follows the first year corrosion rate of reference specimens, so it is a measurement rather than a judgement, and it can be established for a specific site. Within one turbine the base and the nacelle can fall into different categories, so a single coating system across the whole structure is often the wrong answer.
Why does solar racking corrode at the module clamp?
Because the aluminium rail and the stainless clamp are a galvanic pair, and aluminium sits well below stainless in the galvanic series. In a wet outdoor environment the aluminium becomes the anode and corrodes preferentially around the clamp. Isolation at that interface, or a compatible material pairing, is the standard remedy. The same issue applies anywhere an aluminium frame meets a stainless fastener outdoors, and it is much cheaper to address at the enquiry stage than after a few seasons.
Can I torque control a large diameter tower bolt reliably?
Not reliably on its own. As diameter rises, the same relative variation in friction produces a much wider variation in clamp load, because friction acts over a larger area. On a tower flange connection the scatter can exceed the design preload band, which is why direct tension indicator washers or hydraulic tensioning are specified on wind structures. A torque figure is a convenience on site, not a control method.
Is hydrogen embrittlement a risk on hot dip galvanized tower bolts?
It can be, on high strength steel. Hydrogen can be introduced during acid pickling and plating, and embrittlement can appear days after assembly. The controls are stress relief before coating, controlled pickling, and a baking cycle after coating. On high strength tower bolts the hardness limit and the baking record are often specification requirements in their own right, and the coating process has to be controlled rather than assumed.
What coating should I use for a solar rack in a coastal location?
A system rated for C4 or above, typically zinc flake or Dacromet, with isolation at the aluminium to stainless interface. Hot dip galvanizing is used on structural steel but it affects thread fit and is thinnest in the crevice, so it is not the right answer for a clamp that has to be torqued. Tell us the site environment and whether the rail is aluminium or steel, and we will recommend a system against the category.
How do I avoid cracking a solar module when clamping?
By specifying the clamp torque and the contact geometry rather than leaving it to the installer. Module frames and glass are brittle, and over clamping either cracks the glass or permanently deforms the frame, which changes the load path and can invalidate the module warranty. The clamp should spread load over an adequate area and the torque should be specified with a tolerance, not given as a single figure.
What is a direct tension indicator washer and when is it needed?
A washer with raised bumps that flatten at a defined load, so the gap can be measured with a feeler gauge to confirm the preload directly. It is needed wherever friction variation makes torque control unreliable, which in practice means larger diameters and coated threads. On wind tower connections it is the usual method, because it verifies the load rather than inferring it from a torque value that the friction has already compromised.
Can you supply large diameter structural fasteners?
Structural sizes used on wind tower flanges and anchor bolts are supplied with the same material certificate discipline as small parts, including heat lot traceability and mechanical property test reports. Very large diameters and very high preload requirements may need a discussion before quoting, so send the size and the design preload and we will confirm what we can supply and what the lead time would be.
What documentation comes with renewable energy parts?
An EN 10204 3.1 material certificate with heat lot traceability, a dimensional inspection report, a mechanical property test report and coating thickness measurement. A hydrogen embrittlement control record and corrosion test reports are available on request. Where your specification calls for a coating qualification or a particular certificate format, send the requirement with the enquiry so we can confirm it before production.
Can you work with the quantities typical of a renewable project?
Yes. Renewable projects often need moderate quantities of many different parts, and single piece prototypes are accepted for machined components. Low volume changes the unit cost, so the price per part will be higher than a repeat production run, but we quote the job as it is. Samples ship by air freight.
