Power Industry Fasteners

for Heat and Pressure

Fasteners for boilers, heat exchangers, steam and gas piping, pressure vessels and flanges. Material selection driven by creep relaxation at temperature, and by the fact that a property class quoted at room temperature means nothing at operating temperature.

Power Industry Fastener Applications

A hot pressurised joint loses preload even when nothing loosens. Creep in the bolt and relaxation in the gasket both reduce clamping force at temperature, and the fastener has to be selected for what it does at operating temperature rather than for what it does on a test bench. These six assemblies are where that governs.

Boiler assembly

Boilers and Heat Exchangers

Design driver

Sustained temperature over years. Creep relaxes the bolt preload continuously, and the joint has to stay tight for the whole service interval.

Our approach

Alloy selected for the operating temperature rather than for room temperature strength, with a re-torque regime specified after the first heat cycle.

Typical parts Header bolts, tube sheet fasteners, stay bolts, high temperature studs

Steam piping

Steam and Gas Piping

Design driver

Thermal expansion works the flanged joint every cycle, and differential expansion between pipe and bolt changes preload.

Our approach

Material and length matched to the thermal cycle, with washers that accommodate movement without losing load.

Typical parts Flange bolts, studs and nuts, high temperature washers, spacer and jack screws

Pressure vessel

Pressure Vessels and Flanges

Design driver

Gasket relaxation under pressure and temperature, which drops joint load over time even with a perfect bolt.

Our approach

Bolt load calculated with the gasket relaxation allowance, and material grade confirmed against the design temperature.

Typical parts Pressure vessel bolts, flange studs, spiral wound gasket hardware

Valve assembly

Valves, Pumps and Compressors

Design driver

Cycling load combined with temperature, where the fastener is worked every time the machine starts.

Our approach

Fatigue aware thread form and grade selection, with locking methods that survive the temperature.

Typical parts Casing bolts, valve bonnet studs, pump and compressor fasteners

Turbine assembly

Turbines and Generators

Design driver

The highest temperature and the most critical joints on the plant, where documentation is as important as the part.

Our approach

High temperature alloys with full material certificate chain and heat lot traceability on every part.

Typical parts Turbine casing bolts, rotor hardware, generator mounting fasteners

Substation hardware

Transmission and Substation Hardware

Design driver

Long term outdoor exposure with current carrying joints, where corrosion and conductivity both matter.

Our approach

Hot dip galvanized steel and conductive finishes, sized for the corrosivity category of the site.

Typical parts Tower hardware, conductor fittings, substation bolts, grounding hardware

क्यों GUXIANG

Why Power Industry Buyers Work with GUXIANG

We manufacture rather than trade, so forming, machining, heat treatment and finishing sit inside one facility. On a power part that matters because the material grade, the heat lot and the heat treatment record all have to agree with the design temperature, and a handover between suppliers is where that agreement usually breaks.

01

Temperature derating respected

A property class quoted at room temperature is not valid at operating temperature. Material selection is made against the actual design temperature, not against the datasheet headline.

02

Creep relaxation understood

Preload is lost at temperature by creep in the bolt and relaxation in the gasket, not by loosening. The material and the re-torque regime address that mechanism.

03

High temperature alloys machined

A286 and similar alloys are machined in house, with tooling and process parameters set for them rather than borrowed from a carbon steel job.

04

Full material certificate chain

Material certificate with heat lot traceability, mechanical property test report and heat treatment record on every batch, so the receiving inspection has what it needs.

Working to a design temperature you are not sure about?

Send the drawing, the design temperature and the pressure. We will confirm the material grade that holds at that temperature, flag where a property class no longer applies, and return a specification that includes the re-torque regime.

Material Selection by Operating Temperature

The single most important rule on a hot joint is that a property class is only valid at room temperature. Above roughly 300 degrees the numbers on the datasheet no longer describe the bolt, and above 425 degrees a carbon steel bolt is not doing the job the drawing assumes.

सामग्रीUsable to aboutRoom temp tensile (MPa)नोटविशिष्ट उपयोग
Carbon steel, grade 8.8300 °C800Property class not valid above this rangeLow temperature plant, non critical
Alloy steel B7 / 4340540 °C860Standard high pressure flange gradeSteam piping, pressure vessels

316 स्टेनलेस425 °C515Creep limited above this rangeModerate temperature service
Stainless 321700 °C515Stabilised against sensitisationHigh temperature stainless joints

Temperature limits are approximate continuous service limits for the common condition and are for comparison only. The actual limit depends on the applied stress, because creep is a function of both temperature and stress, so a lower stress allows a higher temperature. Confirm against the design condition before selecting.

High Temperature Assembly and Re-torque

A hot joint is assembled once and then worked by every thermal cycle. The assembly method and the re-torque regime matter as much as the material, because preload is lost at temperature by creep rather than by loosening.

A property class is only valid at room temperature. Grade 8.8 means 800 MPa tensile at ambient. At 400 degrees the same bolt does not carry 800 MPa, and the design assumption that it does is one of the most common causes of a failed hot joint. The same applies to proof load and to yield strength. Above roughly 300 degrees the design has to be based on the material strength at temperature rather than on the property class, and the grade designation on the drawing stops being the controlling information.

Traceability and Documentation

Power industry supply requires the full material certificate chain and the heat treatment record, because both feed the design calculation at temperature. Here is what can accompany an order.

Documentation available with your order

Traceability runs from the incoming mill certificate through forming, heat treatment and finishing, and is recorded by lot. Where your specification calls for a particular certificate format or an additional high temperature test, send the requirement with the enquiry so we can confirm it before production.

Technical FAQ

Power Industry Fastener FAQs

Answers to the questions power industry engineers and procurement teams ask most often, with specific values rather than general assurances.

Can I use grade 8.8 bolts on a high temperature joint?

Only up to about 300 degrees, and even then the property class is not the controlling information. Grade 8.8 means 800 MPa tensile at ambient, and the same bolt does not carry 800 MPa at 400 degrees. Above roughly 300 degrees the design has to be based on the material strength at temperature, and above 425 degrees a carbon steel bolt is generally not doing the job the drawing assumes. If your design temperature is above 300 degrees, tell us and we will select against the actual condition.

Because preload is lost at temperature by mechanisms other than loosening. The first heat cycle causes embedding of surface roughness and initial creep, both of which take up preload immediately. Creep then continues at temperature, so clamp load declines slowly over the service interval. Shutdown and thermal cycling change it again as the joint cools and contracts. A re-torque regime after the first heat cycle, and at defined intervals or shutdowns afterwards, is normal practice on hot joints.

Creep is slow permanent deformation of a material under sustained stress, which for a bolt means it gets slightly longer and the clamp force drops. Relaxation is the reduction in stress that happens in a bolt held at a fixed length, which is the actual condition in a tightened joint because the bolt cannot extend. Both reduce preload, and both accelerate sharply with temperature, which is why a joint that is stable at ambient can lose most of its clamp load at 500 degrees.

Alloy steel B7 or 4340 is the standard high pressure flange grade in that range, and it is usable to roughly 540 degrees. Above that, A286 retains strength well and is usable to around 700 degrees. The choice depends on the applied stress as much as on the temperature, because creep is a function of both, so send the design temperature and the pressure and we will confirm the grade against the condition.

Yes. A compound that is correct at ambient can lose its carrier or carbonise at 500 degrees, and the change affects the friction enough to alter the torque to preload relationship. On high temperature studs a silver plated or specifically rated anti seize is usually specified, and the compound has to be named in the assembly procedure rather than left to whoever is doing the work. Tell us the service temperature and we will confirm what is appropriate.

Hydrogen embrittlement is the mechanism, and it is a risk on plated high strength steel in a wet hydrogen sulphide environment. The controls are material selection to a limit on hardness, stress relief before plating, and a mandatory hydrogen baking cycle after plating. Above a certain hardness the risk rises sharply, so the hardness limit is often a specification requirement in its own right. If the service is sour, state that in the enquiry because it changes both the material and the process.

Rolled rather than cut. A cut thread severs the grain flow of the bar, while a rolled thread forces the grain to follow the thread profile, which raises fatigue strength on the same material and size. On a joint that is cycled by every start and stop this is a meaningful gain, and it does not change the external dimensions of the part. We can supply rolled threads where the drawing or the duty requires them.

Yes. A286 and similar alloys are machined in house, but they work harden and are abrasive, so tooling and process parameters have to be set for them rather than borrowed from a carbon steel job. Tell us the material condition you are working from, because a forged bar behaves differently from a rolled one, and we will confirm machinability before quoting.

An EN 10204 3.1 material certificate with heat lot traceability, a dimensional inspection report, a mechanical property test report and a heat treatment record. Hardness test reports and coating thickness measurement are available on request. Where your specification calls for a particular certificate format or a high temperature test, send the requirement with the enquiry so we can confirm it before production.

Yes. Power projects often need moderate quantities of many different parts, and single piece prototypes are accepted for machined components. Low volume changes the unit cost, so the price per part will be higher than a repeat production run, but we quote the job as it is. Samples ship by air freight.
