Electronics and Electrical Fastener Applications
Electronics fasteners are constrained by space and by materials that behave nothing like steel. A screw that works in a steel bracket will strip a thermoplastic housing, and an anodised fastener will silently break a shielding path. These six assemblies are where the fastener specification decides the outcome.
Electronic Enclosures and Housings
Thin wall thermoplastic or sheet metal, and limited internal clearance for both the screw head and the driver.
Thread engagement sized for the housing material rather than for steel, and low profile heads where clearance is tight.
Typical parts Self tapping screws, thread forming screws, panel fasteners, machined cover frames
PCB Assemblies and Standoffs
Repeatable stack height across thousands of boards, with no thread damage on repeated assembly.
Brass and stainless standoffs machined to length, with hex and round options for the access available on the board.
Typical parts Hex and round standoffs, PCB screws and washers, threaded inserts
Control Cabinets and Panels
Panels are opened for maintenance, so the fastener must survive repeated disassembly and stay captive where possible.
Captive and quarter turn designs that keep hardware with the panel, and drive systems that suit the tooling on site.
Typical parts Captive screws, panel fasteners, rack screws, cage nuts
Sensors, Connectors and Terminals
Conductivity and galvanic pairing. A fastener in the current path has to stay conductive, and must not corrode the terminal around it.
Conductive finishes where the joint carries current, and material pairing checked against the terminal alloy.
Typical parts Terminal screws, connector hardware, grounding screws and washers
Power Supplies and Electrical Hardware
Heat and current. Terminations loosen as copper expands, and the fastener sits in a warm enclosure for the life of the product.
Belleville and conical washers that maintain load as materials expand, and locking methods that survive temperature.
Typical parts Terminal screws, Belleville washers, heat sink fasteners, busbar hardware
Consumer Electronics and Small Appliances
Assembly cycle time on a high volume line, and a head that does not mark the visible face of the product.
Drive and head geometry matched to the tooling already on the line, with low profile and washer assemblies where load is spread.
Typical parts Machine screws, self tapping screws, thread forming screws, PC screw and washer sets
Why Electronics Buyers Work with GUXIANG
We manufacture rather than trade, so forming, threading, machining and finishing sit inside one facility. On an electronics part that matters because the fastener interacts with the housing material, the shielding path and the assembly tooling, and all three have to be right at once.
Plastic aware thread design
A screw designed for a steel bracket will strip a thermoplastic housing. Engagement length and thread form are sized for the actual housing material, not for a steel rule of thumb.
EMI conscious finishing
Anodising is an insulating layer, so an anodised fastener through a shielding joint breaks the conductive path. Where a joint has to carry current, the finish is chosen to keep it conductive.
Line compatible drives
Head and drive geometry are matched to the tooling already installed, so changing the part does not mean revalidating the station or retraining the operator.
Miniature without penalty
Small threads are held to the same tolerance discipline as large ones, with tooling dedicated to the part so a reorder matches the original run.
Working to a housing material you are not sure about?
Send the drawing, the housing material or a photo of the assembly. We will size the thread engagement for the actual material, confirm whether the finish keeps the joint conductive where it needs to be, and quote against your production plan.
Thread Engagement and Drive Selection for Electronics
Two decisions cause most electronics assembly problems: how deep the thread goes into the housing, and whether the drive survives the torque needed to get there. Both depend on the housing material more than on the screw.
| Housing material | Minimum engagement | Thread form | नोट |
|---|---|---|---|
| स्टील | 1 to 1.5 × diameter | Machine thread | Standard rule of thumb, pilot hole drilled and tapped |
| एल्यूमिनियम | About 2 × diameter | Machine thread | Lower shear strength, threads strip more easily |
| Zinc and brass die cast | About 2 × diameter | Machine thread | Common in connector and terminal bodies |
| Thermoplastic, thread forming | About 2 × diameter | Self tapping, forming | Stronger thread, higher hoop stress on the boss |
| Thermoplastic, thread cutting | About 2 × diameter | Self tapping, cutting | Lower hoop stress, slightly weaker thread |
| Thermoset and laminate | 1.5 × diameter | Machine thread | Less creep than thermoplastic, holds preload better |
Engagement figures are design rules of thumb for initial sizing and must be confirmed against the actual material, boss geometry and load before release.
Finishes for Electronics and Electrical Joints
On an electronics product the finish does a second job that most industries never consider: it either keeps the joint conductive or it does not. This table separates the two cases, because the right finish depends on whether the fastener is in the current path.
| खत्म | प्रवाहकीय | Corrosion class | विशिष्ट उपयोग | नोट |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bright tin | हाँ | मध्यम से कम | Terminals, current carrying joints | Common on electrical hardware |
| निकल | हाँ | मध्यम | Connectors, shielding contact | Hard, good wear, conductive |
| जिंक चढ़ाना, clear | हाँ | मध्यम से कम | Internal hardware | Conductive, limited corrosion life |
| Zinc nickel | हाँ | उच्च | Outdoor and damp electrical | Corrosion resistant and conductive |
| Brass, bare | हाँ | कम | Grounding and terminal hardware | Tarnishes, conductivity retained |
| Anodising | नहीं | High on aluminium | Enclosures, brackets | Insulating, breaks a shielding path |
| Passivation, stainless | हाँ | Stainless base | Structural and shielding | Non magnetic grades available |
| ब्लैक ऑक्साइड | हाँ | कम | Tooling and internal parts | Conductive, minimal corrosion life |
Thread forming and thread cutting are not interchangeable in plastic. A thread forming screw displaces material as it goes in, which produces a stronger thread but raises hoop stress in the boss and can crack it if the boss wall is thin. A thread cutting screw removes material, so hoop stress stays low but the thread is slightly weaker and chips can be generated. The wrong choice either cracks the housing or strips the thread, and neither shows up in a dimensional inspection of the screw.
Traceability and Documentation
Electronics buyers need compliance documentation more than they need process documentation. Here is what can accompany an order.
- EN 10204 3.1 material certificate
- Mill certificate traceability by heat lot
- Dimensional inspection report
- RoHS material compliance declaration
- REACH declaration on request
- Coating thickness measurement
- Lot marking on parts and packaging
- Retained sample held for future comparison
Traceability runs from the incoming mill certificate through machining, threading and finishing, and is recorded by lot. Where your compliance file requires a declaration in a particular format, send the requirement with the drawing so we can confirm it before production.

Electronics Fastener FAQs
Answers to the questions electronics engineers and procurement teams ask most often, with specific values rather than general assurances.
How deep should a screw go into a thermoplastic housing?
As a starting rule, about twice the screw diameter of engagement in thermoplastic, compared with roughly one to one and a half diameters in steel. The reason is shear strength: thermoplastic is much weaker in the thread flank than steel, so the same engagement length gives far less stripping torque. The actual figure depends on the resin, the boss wall thickness and whether the boss has a weld line, so confirm against the housing material before release.
What is the difference between thread forming and thread cutting screws in plastic?
A thread forming screw displaces material as it is driven, producing a stronger thread but raising hoop stress in the boss, which can crack a thin wall. A thread cutting screw removes material, so hoop stress stays low but the thread is slightly weaker and plastic chips are generated inside the housing. Forming suits ductile thermoplastics with adequate boss wall. Cutting suits brittle materials, thin walls and assemblies where chips are acceptable or can be evacuated.
Why did my enclosure fail an EMI test when every part passed inspection?
The most common cause is an insulating finish in the shielding path. Anodised aluminium is an insulator, so an anodised screw or an anodised enclosure surface will not complete a conductive path even though the base metal is an excellent conductor. Other causes are paint or coating on a faying surface, and a fastener that does not achieve metal to metal contact because a captive washer spreads the load over an area that was supposed to be conductive. Specify a conductive finish, mask the contact area, or use a conductive gasket.
Which finish should I use where the joint carries current?
Bright tin and nickel are the usual choices for current carrying electrical hardware, and bare brass is common for grounding and terminals. All three are conductive. Avoid anodising and thick passivation on any surface that has to carry current or close a shield, because both are insulating. Where the joint is also exposed to humidity, zinc nickel gives corrosion resistance while staying conductive.
Can you supply miniature fasteners in M2 and smaller?
Machine threads from M2 upward are available, and smaller or custom threads are quoted per part. Small threads are held to the same tolerance discipline as large ones, but the achievable tolerance on a very small internal feature depends on how it is measured, so send the drawing with the critical features marked and we will confirm what we can hold.
What standoff lengths and types can you supply?
Hex and round standoffs in brass and stainless, machined to length, with threaded or unthreaded options and male female combinations. Length is a machined dimension, so it is held to the machining tolerance rather than to a standard list, which means unusual stack heights are not a problem. If the standoff is a standard catalogue item, tell us the part number and we will quote an equivalent.
How do I stop screws loosening on a panel that is opened for service?
Captive fasteners keep the hardware with the panel, which solves both the loose screw problem and the risk of hardware falling into the equipment. Where a captive design is not possible, a prevailing torque locking element or a nylon insert works, but both lose effectiveness after repeated assembly, so a captive design is usually better on a panel that is opened regularly.
Do you supply RoHS and REACH declarations?
Yes. Material compliance declarations for RoHS and REACH are supplied on request with your order. Note that RoHS restricts hexavalent chromium, which affects some passivation chemistries, so if your specification calls for a particular passivation process it is worth confirming the chemistry as well as the process. Most electronics buyers need the declaration and a material certificate rather than a full test report.
Can you machine custom brackets and machined parts for electronics?
Yes. We accept drawings in STEP, DWG and PDF and return a manufacturing feasibility review covering critical dimensions, tolerance stack, material and any surface treatment. Our 3 axis machining holds ±0.03 mm and takes parts up to 400 × 300 × 200 mm. If a part needs 5 axis access, a tight internal tolerance, or a size beyond that envelope, we will say so before quoting.
What is the minimum order quantity for electronics fasteners?
के लिए मानक फास्टनरों in common sizes and finishes the minimum is negotiable and depends mainly on thread size, because these run on stock tooling. Custom parts and custom finishes are set by the tooling run rather than by the volume. If you are developing a new product, ask for a sample first, because sample quantities have no meaningful minimum.
