What are Binding Posts?

A binding post is a two-piece fastener: a screw with a head on one side, and a matching barrel with internal threads and its own head on the other. The screw threads into the barrel, clamping the material between the two heads. No nut needed—the barrel is the nut.

Depending on who you ask, these are Chicago screws, screw posts, interscrews, or book screws. The name shifts by industry—Chicago screw in leather and belt making, screw post in bookbinding and scrapbooking, binding post in electrical panel work and catalog hardware. The barrel head and the screw head sit flush or near-flush on both sides, leaving no protruding thread and no sharp tail to trim.

How Binding Posts Work

The screw passes through a punched or drilled hole from one side of the material stack. The barrel inserts from the opposite side. Tightening the screw draws the barrel head and screw head together, compressing the layers between them.

The clamping force comes from the screw threads engaging the internal barrel threads. Unlike a bolt that pulls a nut against a single surface, a binding post clamps from both sides with two bearing faces of equal diameter. This symmetrical clamp distributes pressure evenly—no one-sided dimpling of soft materials like leather or cardstock.

The barrel side often has no drive recess—just a smooth head. This is deliberate: only the screw side is accessible for tightening in most installations. For applications where both sides are accessible, double-drive posts (screw and barrel both slotted or hex) allow tightening from either face.

Materials

Brass (Standard) The default for bookbinding and leatherwork. Brass machines easily, resists corrosion in indoor environments, and develops a patina over time that some leatherworkers consider a feature rather than a defect. Brass binding posts up to roughly M5 (3/16 in.) handle typical leatherwork and bookbinding clamping loads without deformation. Above that, the thin barrel wall becomes the weak link—tighten by feel, not by torque spec.

Nickel-Plated Brass Same base metal as plain brass, with a bright silver finish. The nickel plate resists tarnish and fingerprints better than raw brass. Common on visible hardware for bags, wallets, and consumer leather goods where the warm brass color is not the desired aesthetic. Stainless Steel For outdoor leather goods, marine canvas work, and food-equipment straps. The screw thread is smaller than the barrel outer diameter—the barrel wall needs thickness to carry the threads and resist clamping compression. A 1/4 in. barrel typically uses a #8 or #10 screw thread internally.

Grip range rule of thumb: The barrel length should match the material stack thickness within 0.5 mm. A barrel too short won’t fully engage the screw threads.
