Medical Device Fastener Applications

Medical fasteners are specified for three things at once: dimensional repeatability, corrosion resistance through repeated sterilisation, and a surface that can actually be cleaned. These six assemblies are where those requirements are decided by the fastener specification rather than by the device design.

Diagnostic analyser

Diagnostic and Analytical Equipment

Design driver

Repeatability across thousands of assemblies. A dimension that drifts between batches changes the calibration of the instrument, not just the part.

Our approach

Thread rolling and controlled machining on tooling held for the part, so a reorder is dimensionally identical to the original run.

Typical parts Machine screws, socket screws, threaded inserts, machined brackets and mounts

Surgical instrument

Surgical Instruments

Design driver

Sustained corrosion resistance through repeated autoclave cycles, plus a surface finish that does not trap contamination in service.

Our approach

316L or titanium with passivation, and surface finish specified as a measurable value rather than as a finish grade.

Typical parts Socket screws, dowel pins, hinge pins, custom machined instrument parts

Laboratory analyser

Laboratory and Analytical Instruments

Design driver

Chemical exposure. Reagents and cleaning agents attack the joint far more aggressively than a medical device ever does.

Our approach

Material selection against the actual reagent list, and 316L rather than 304 where chloride exposure is continuous.

Typical parts Fasteners for housings, manifolds, sensor mounts, fluidic fittings

Medical enclosure

Medical Device Enclosures and Covers

Design driver

Covers are opened for service, so the fastener must survive repeated assembly without stripping the thread in the housing.

Our approach

Thread engagement sized for the housing material, and locking methods that do not shed debris into the enclosure.

Typical parts Captive screws, panel fasteners, threaded inserts, machined cover frames

Dental device

Dental and Optometric Devices

Design driver

Small, high precision parts where the fastener is part of the mechanism rather than just a fixings element.

Our approach

Machining to tight tolerances with head styles that suit the hand piece and the access available.

Typical parts Precision screws, shoulder screws, dowels, machined mechanism parts

Imaging equipment

Imaging Equipment and MRI Environments

Design driver

Magnetic interference. A fastener that becomes slightly magnetic will disturb the field even though it started non magnetic.

Our approach

Material condition specified so the austenitic structure stays stable, rather than assuming all stainless is non magnetic.

Typical parts Non magnetic fasteners, titanium parts, machined mounts and spacers

为什么选择 GUXIANG

Why Medical Device Buyers Work with GUXIANG

We manufacture rather than trade, so forming, machining, threading and finishing all sit inside one facility. On a medical part that matters because a handover between suppliers is exactly where a dimensional or surface finish variation gets introduced.

01

Specified surface finish

Surface finish is written into the specification as a measurable value and reported per batch, rather than described as a finish grade that means different things to different inspectors.

02

Passivation done properly

Passivation is a chemical treatment that restores the chromium oxide layer on stainless. It is not a cleaning step and does not remove machining residue, so we treat the two as separate operations.

03

Material condition control

Cold working changes the structure of austenitic stainless and can make it measurably magnetic. Where that matters, the material condition is specified rather than left to the supplier.

04

Prototype to production

Machined parts move from a single prototype to a production run on the same tooling and process, so the part you validated is the part that ships.

Need a fastener specified against a sterilisation or cleaning cycle?

Send the drawing, the material callout and the sterilisation method. We will confirm what we can hold, flag anything in the specification that will not survive the process, and return a written specification you can file with the part.

Medical Device Materials and Selection

Material choice in medical devices is driven by corrosion resistance through sterilisation, by whether the part must be non magnetic, and by how it will be cleaned in service. These four requirements pull in different directions, which is why 316L and titanium dominate the specification list.

材料Key property典型用途注
316L stainlessLow carbon, resists sensitisationSurgical instruments, fastenersPreferred over 304 in chloride exposure
304不锈钢Lower cost austenitic gradeEnclosures, non critical partsAdequate where chloride exposure is limited
Titanium grade 5High strength to weight, non magneticImplants, imaging compatible partsNon magnetic in the annealed condition
Titanium grade 2Very corrosion resistant, formableHousings, ducting, fittingsEasier to machine than grade 5
PEEKEngineering polymer, autoclavableInsulating parts, non metal jointsWithstands repeated steam sterilisation
尼龙6/6Low cost polymerNon structural, insulating partsAbsorbs moisture, dimensionally less stable
黄铜Machinable, conductiveElectrical and grounding partsNot for sterilised or wet environments

Material figures are typical published values for the common condition and are for comparison only. Actual values must be taken from the material certificate for the specific heat lot supplied.

Surface Finish and Cleanliness for Medical Parts

A medical fastener has to satisfy two separate requirements that are often confused: a surface finish that can be cleaned, and a surface that has actually been cleaned. The first is a design specification, the second is a process and packaging question.

要求What it controlsHow it is specifiedCommon failure
Surface roughnessCleanability, bacterial retentionRa value, measured and reportedSpecified as a finish grade instead of a number
钝化Chromium oxide layer on stainlessASTM A967 or equivalentAssumed to also clean the part
ElectropolishingRemoves surface material, raises Cr to Fe ratioMaterial removal depthApplied without controlling depth
DeburringRemoves raised material and burrsVisual and dimensional checkBurrs left in blind holes and threads
整洁Residual machining fluid and particulateCleaning process plus verificationConfused with passivation
Clean packagingProtects the part to point of usePackaging specificationDouble bagged but not cleaned

316 and 316L are not interchangeable. The L grade is a low carbon version that resists sensitisation, the carbide precipitation that happens in the heat affected zone during welding and that leaves the surrounding metal vulnerable to corrosion. If the part will be welded or will sit in a chloride environment continuously, the drawing should call 316L explicitly, because a plain 316 fastener in that position is a corrosion risk that will not show up on a dimensional inspection report.

Traceability and Documentation

Medical device buyers rarely need aerospace level documentation, but the receiving inspection requirement is still real. Here is what can accompany an order.

Documentation available with your order

Traceability runs from the incoming mill certificate through machining, threading and finishing, and is recorded by lot. Where your device documentation calls for a particular format or an additional verification, send the requirement with the drawing so we can confirm it before production rather than after.

Technical FAQ

Medical Device Fastener FAQs

Answers to the questions medical device engineers and procurement teams ask most often, with specific values rather than general assurances.

Austenitic stainless is non magnetic in the solution annealed condition, but cold working during forming, threading or heading can transform some of the austenite into martensite, which is magnetic. A fastener that started non magnetic can therefore become measurably magnetic after manufacture. If the part goes into an imaging environment, the material condition needs to be specified and verified, and titanium is the safer choice where the magnetic limit is tight.

Specify a measurable Ra value rather than a finish grade, because a grade means different things to different inspectors and a grade alone cannot be verified at receiving. The value you choose depends on the cleaning method and on whether the surface is hand cleaned or machine cleaned. Ask us for the achievable range on the feature in question, because Ra is much easier to hold on an accessible external surface than inside a blind hole.

Yes. Titanium is supplied in grade 2 and grade 5, both as 标准紧固件 and as custom machined parts. Titanium machines well but it work hardens and conducts heat into the tool rather than away from it, so the tooling and the process have to be set up for it rather than borrowed from a stainless job. Tell us the material condition you are working from, because a forged bar behaves differently from a rolled one.

We supply material certificates for the grade ordered, which is what establishes the material itself. Biocompatibility of the finished device is a separate assessment that depends on the whole assembly and the intended contact, and it is carried out at device level rather than fastener level. If your device documentation needs a material declaration for a specific grade, send the format with the drawing and we will provide it.

Cleaning is a defined process step rather than an assumption, and it is recorded as part of the batch record. It covers removal of machining fluid and particulate from accessible features, blind holes and threads. Verification method depends on what your specification requires, and clean packaging is specified separately so the part is still clean when it reaches the assembly bench. If you have a written cleanliness specification, send it and we will confirm we can meet it.

Clean packaging with lot marking is available, and parts can be packed individually or in controlled quantities depending on how your line consumes them. Tell us whether the parts go into a controlled assembly environment or straight onto a production bench, because that determines whether the packaging needs to preserve cleanliness or simply needs to keep the parts separated and identified.

On CNC milled and turned parts we hold ±0.03 mm on controlled features. Tightness on any single feature depends on its size, its access and how it is measured, so a small internal feature will not hold the same tolerance as a larger external one. Send the drawing with the critical features marked and we will come back with what we can hold and what would need a secondary operation.

Yes. Medical device quantities are often low, and single piece prototypes are accepted for machined parts. Low volume changes the unit cost, so the price per part will be higher than a repeat production run, but we quote the job as it is rather than pushing a volume that does not exist. Samples ship by air freight.
